"And it sure ain't a necklace," Buck commented.

"Then what is it?" Nancy asked.

Suddenly Joe pulled his hand away. The color had drained from his face. "It's an artillery shell!" he said. "This thing is about to go off in our faces!"

ET THEM AWAY, Joe!" Frank shouted. "Fll delay the fuse!"

"You'll be killed, Frank!" Nancy said.

Joe pulled her by the arm. "He knows what he's doing. Come on!"

Frank's neck muscles were stiff with tension. Sweat was forming in a warm pool around his collar. His hands brushed aside the sand, revealing a little tube of mercury fulminate—the detonator. All he needed to do was rip it out—but gently. One jiggle of the shell and it was all over. He hooked his fingers delicately under it.

Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Are you crazy?" It was Buck.

"Buck, no!" Frank yelled.
